The episode opens in the opulent heart of Lahore’s Heeramandi, in the 1920s. We meet Rehana, a powerful but aging courtesan, presiding over the lavish Shahi Mahal. In a ruthless display of dominance, she sells her younger sister Mallika’s newborn daughter for a coveted diamond necklace.
Years later, a defiant Mallika, now known as Mallikajaan, has risen to become the undisputed queen of Shahi Mahal. Her beauty and wit command respect, but a shadowed past and a steely resolve simmer beneath the surface. Rehana, now faded and resentful, simmers with jealousy.
The episode introduces us to the other inhabitants of Shahi Mahal:
- Waheeda, Mallikajaan’s younger sister, harbors bitterness and secretly steals from Bibbojaan, Mallikajaan’s talented firstborn daughter.
- Alamzeb, Mallikajaan’s other daughter, is a spirited yet naïve young woman, groomed for a life as a courtesan, a future she resists.
- Lajjo, Mallikajaan’s adopted daughter, dreams of marrying her longtime patron, Zoravar Ali Khan, defying the traditions of Heeramandi.
The arrival of Gunther, a pompous Englishman, disrupts the delicate balance. He offers Mallikajaan a gramophone, a symbol of the changing times, but she dismisses him with a haughty scorn.
Meanwhile, a new threat emerges in the form of Tajdar Baloch, the educated son of a local Nawab. Back from Oxford, Tajdar visits Heeramandi with a fiery disdain for its customs and the British Raj. He encounters Bibbojaan and is immediately captivated by her intelligence and defiance.
The episode ends with a sense of unease. The web of relationships in Shahi Mahal is intricately woven. Secrets lurk beneath the surface, and a clash of cultures and desires threatens to unravel the carefully constructed world of Heeramandi.
